PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance which is a synthetic intermediate for perfume substances in a short process, by hydrogenating 2,2,3-trimethyl-6- hydroxymethylenecyclohexanone which can be readily synthesized from compounds readily available in the market at a low cost as a raw material. CONSTITUTION:3,3,4-Trimethyl-1-cyclohexene-1-carbaldehyde expressed by formula I is hydrogenated in the presence of a reducing reagent in an organic solvent to give the aimed compound expressed by formula II. The above-mentioned compound expressed by formula I is synthesized by methylating 2,3- dimethylcyclohexanone with methyl bromide in the presence of sodium hydroxide, reacting the resultant compound with ethyl formate in the presence of sodium methoxide, reacting the resultant compound expressed by formula III with ethyl vinyl ether in the presence of an acid, and hydrogenating the resultant 2,2,3-trimethyl-6-(1-ethoxyethoxymethylene) cyclohexanone expressed by formula IV.
