PURPOSE:To eliminate deterioration in readout function characteristics by fitting an elastic support leg at four corners of the reverse surface of the base of a reader and on the reverse surface of the base right under a scale support part and suppressing the resonance of the reader due to the oscillation of a pulse motor. CONSTITUTION:A support leg 20 formed of an elastic body such as rubbers is fitted at four corners of the reverse surface of the base 19 of the reader. Further, another support leg 21 formed of an elastic body such as rubber is fitted on the reverse surface of the base 19 right under a fixed table 18. When an optical unit is scanned in a subscanning direction to read an original, the current of a circuit forming an electromagnet provided to the slider 3 of the linear pulse motor is switched. The scale 1 vibrates during this current switching, but this vibration is absorbed by the elastic support legs 20 and 21 fitted on the reverse surface of the base right under the scale support part. Consequently, the reader body is prevented from resonating.
