The present invention provides a process for processing the surfaces of a work piece of cast iron that contains carbon, in which the surface material is removed electrochemically and is also processed mechanically, the electrochemical removal and the mechanical processing taking place in at least two separate process steps whose operating parameters can be adjusted independently of each other, and during the mechanical processing only friction plating of the surface takes place without any significant sealing of the graphite flakes.
