PURPOSE:To attain a compressing method for pattern data with high efficiency by setting a rectangular area to extract characters, symbols and the pattern elements based on the changing point of a peripheral distribution in the direction (x) and the changing point of a peripheral distribution in the direction (y) respectively. CONSTITUTION:A peripheral distribution is produced in the direction (x) to the picture data 100 from a peripheral distribution generating part 1100. Then a peripheral distribution is obtained only for a large block pattern by the commands given from a segment number generating part 1102 and a block number generating part 1103. While a peripheral distribution changing point extracting part 1101 obtains the (x) coordinate value of the non-zero value varying to the non-zero value from the zero value as well as the (x) coordinates of the non-zero value varying to the zero value from the non-zero value against the peripheral distribution in the direction (x). A peripheral distribution generating part 1104 obtains a peripheral distribution in the direction (y). A peripheral distribution changing point extracting part 1105 obtains a changing point from the peripheral distribution in the direction (y). A rectangular area setting part 1106 sets a rectangular area including a changing point and start and end points. The adjacent rectangular areas are united in both directions (x) and (y) at the part 1106.
