Polyene compounds useful in the treatment of allergic responses

Polyene compounds represented by the formula <IMAGE> I where R is H or lower alkyl of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R1 is H, lower alkyl of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or aralkyl; and R2 is (CH2)nCH2OH, CHO or CO2R; wherein n is 1 or 2. The foregoing compounds have been found active in regulating the formation of lipoxygenase and as such possess therapeutic value in the treatment of inflammatory conditions and allergic responses.
