PURPOSE:To improve traveling fuel consumption by correcting the aimed air-fuel ratio according to the shift position of a transmission, thus permitting the correction to the aimed air-fuel ratio fitted for the load state of a car in traveling. CONSTITUTION:In the aimed air-fuel ratio setting subroutine, aimed air-fuel ratio lambdaT is searched from an A/F data map on the basis of the engine revolution speed Ne and the absolute pressure PBA. If the shift position of the 5-stage speed transmission of a car is at the third speed, the aimed air fuel ratio lambdaT is maintained, and in case of the fourth or the fifth speed, the value which is obtained by multiplying the searched aimed air fuel ratio lambdaT by 0.4 or 0.6 is set as a new aimed air-fuel ratio. When the shift position of the transmission is at the first, second or neutral position, of the transmission is at the first, second or neutral position, it is judged that the air-fuel ratio feedback condition is not satisfied. The valve opening time of an electromagnetic opening/closing valve 9 is corrected for the new aimed air-fuel ratio. Therefore, the transmission is applied with a low load at the high-speed shift position, and the traveling fuel consumption particularly in the low load range can be improved by correcting the aimed air-fuel ratio to the lean side.
