PURPOSE:To successively form a pattern, by positioning a roll by a holding member and setting a moving bed to be intermittently moved while repeating the pressing action of a cutting unit to the roll. CONSTITUTION:A device forms a holding member 22 for a roll 1 and a tailstock 25 in both end parts on a bed 21, and the holding member 22, serving for rotating the held roll 1 and for performing its indexing action, provides an indexing unit 24 for a rotation of the indexing action. When a recessed groove is cut in a predetermined pattern on a surface of the roll 1 by a wheel 10 provided in the point end of a cutting unit 40, the device, moving a moving bed 30 by a mover 26 to set a cutting position for the axial direction of the roll and pressing a tool rest 35 toward the center axis of the roll, cuts the recessed groove in a predetermined depth.
