PURPOSE:To enhance overall printing speed, by a method wherein the period of time from the moment of starting an operation of a printing hammer to the moment of permitting the start of movement of a print wheel to a spoke address position corresponding to the next character code is varied in accordance with printing energy of the printing hammer. CONSTITUTION:The movement inhibit period TW from the moment t0 of starting the operation of the printing hammer 1 to the moment of permitting the start of the movement of the print wheel 7 to the spoke address position corresponding to the next character code is varied to TW0 or TW1 in accordance with [low (0)] or [high (1)] energy level of the printing energy of the hammer 1. Accordingly, for example, when printing is conducted with high printing energy, the timing of the start of the movement of the print wheel 7 is earlier than that in the case where printing is conducted with low printing energy. As a result, the overall printing speed becomes higher.
