摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain efficiently the titled ethanol useful as a raw material for synthesizing drugs, agricultural chemicals, etc., requiring optical activity, by bringing a specific fungus into contact with an alpha-haloacetophenone. CONSTITUTION:A fungus (e.g., Candida humicola) belonging to the genus Candi da is cultivated in a nutritive medium containing glucose, peptone, etc., to give a mold, which is reacted with an alpha-haloacetophenone shown by the formula I (X: halogen) at 5-9pH at 10-60 deg.C for 3-120hr, this compound is asymmetri cally reduced to form an (S)-2-halo-1-phenyl ethanol shown by the formula II (X is halogen) having (S) configuration and it is separated from the reaction product and purified.
