PURPOSE:To make symbol selection easy by selecting a kind in which a desired symbol is included by means of a kind-selecting means, and by listing only the symbol group of the kind to display it. CONSTITUTION:When a symbol input is directed by an input device 1, the content in a symbol learning buffer 8 is displayed in a displayer 2. If a desired symbol exists in the displayed symbol group, it is selected by depressing a symbol selection key and thus the symbol learning processing is conducted. In case where the desired symbol does not exist in the symbol pattern displayed based on the buffer 8, a symbol-kind selection key is depressed, and as the numeric character key correspondent to the parameter of the desired symbol is successively depressed, respective symbol buffer 9 is generated, and the candidate symbols are displayed in a batch of constant number of pieces in the displayer 2. If the desired symbol exists in the symbol pattern, it is selected by operating the symbol selection key, but if not existing, the next pattern is displayed by means of the symbol-pattern operating key until the desired symbol appears, when it is selected.
