PURPOSE:To improve the recognition rate of an optical reader, by dividing a dictionary for matching character pattern into plural blocks and, when an answer having the smallest degree of dissidence among blocks is branched to the next block, finding the answer in the branched block. CONSTITUTION:Since a character pattern inputted from a scanner is matched with a character pattern dictionary composed of plural blocks, a fixed value indicating the leading edge of the leading storage block of the dictionary is set in a block starting address. Then the character pattern is matched with all patterns in the block and, when the smallest degree of dissidence exceeds a prescribed threshold, the character pattern is rejected. Then whether or not the header of the found answer having the smallest degree of dissidence points the next block is judged and, when the header does not point, the answer is outputted. When pointing the next block, the block starting address is updated and the matching operation is again carried out.
