PURPOSE:To generate monochrome and halftone of high resolution by controlling an optical information generating part so that the direction of polarization of the output light of the optical information generating part is approximately parallel with that of polarization on the incidence side of a selected color of a color selecting part. CONSTITUTION:The optical information generating part is constituted with a light source 1 and a matrix panel 2. The matrix panel 2 consists of scanning electrodes in the horizontal direction, signal electrodes in the vertical direction, and electrooptic materials at intersections between them. A red color polarizing plate 3 whose red transmission direction is vertical and a green color polarizing plate 4 whose green transmission direction is horizontal are provided between the matrix panel 2 and a polarization plane control plate 5. The direction of polarization of the polarization plane control plate 5 is controlled through a polarization plane control driver circuit 9 by the signal of a control circuit 10, and scanning of the matrix panel 2 is started synchronously with this control to output green and red alternately to a linearly polarizing plate 6. The time of one period is set within the after image duration of human eyes, and gradation is controlled by the optical information generating part. Thus, colors including halftone are displayed with a high resolution.
