Phenoxy-phenoxy-propionic acid derivs. of formula(I) and their salts were prepd by the reaction of (II) and BrCR2COR3 . In (I) X is halogen, nitro, cyano or trifluoromethyl; Y is H, halogen, nitro or cyano; R1 is alkyl; R2 is H or alkyl; R3 is hydroxy, alkoxy, amino or dialkylamino; M is Na or K. Selective herbicides which are active against a wide variety of weeds, whilst avoiding crop damage, also have low toxicity to animals. The compds. may be used in association with other active compds. such as other herbicides, defoliants, growth inhibitors, etc.
