Transfer printing method uses activating solvent coating to permit low-temp. transfer. A transfer sheet consists of a peelable sheet 0.02-0.10 mm, pref. 1-5 micron thick, e.g. polyethylene sheet coated with wax, a transparent layer, e.g. ethyl cellulose, 2-20 micron thick, a 2-10 g/sq.m printing pattern and an adhesion layer 5-20 micron thick. Before being overlaid with support material on which the pattern is to be transferred, the transfer sheet is coated with a solvent that can cause swelling or dissolution of the adhesion layer or the support material, e.g. methanol, isopropanol, toluene, cyclohexane or diethylene glycol monoethyl ether.
