PURPOSE:A whole aromatic polymer which forms an optically anisotropic melt phase satisfying specific conditions is melt-extruded into fibers under specific conditions and the fibers are heat treated for a relative short time to give fibers with desired strength with good spinnability. CONSTITUTION:The melt extrusion of a polymer which is composed of recurring units of formulas I to V (X is O, NH; A1-A3 are aromatic residues of straight- line orientation), 20-90mol%, 5-35mol%, 0-35mol%, 0-35mol% and 0-70mol% where the total moles of units of formula III and formula IV equals to the moles of unit of formula II and the total moles of the units of formula I and formula V is 20-90%, has an inherent viscosity of 1.5dl/g or higher, measured with 0.1w/v% solution in pentafluorophenol and satisfied optically anisotropic melt phase where transmission under polarization microscope is in Tm/Tp>=0.15 (Tm is the polymer transmission under crossing Nicol prisms; Tp is blank transmission under parallel Nicol prisms) is effected at a temperature over 0.1Tp.
