PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful for industrial purpose, e.g. intermediate for dyes, etc., in high yield, by reacting a tert-amine with a hydroxyalkanesulfonic acid at a specific temperature using an orthoacid ester as a dehydrative condensation agent. CONSTITUTION:A sulfoalkyl quaternary salt cab be produced by reacting a tert-amine with a hydroxyalkanesulfonic acid at 100-250 deg.C using an orthoacid ester as a dehydrative condensation agent. The process has various advantages such as the conversion of the orthoester to a carboxylic acid ester and alcohol having lower boiling point to facilitate the removal from the system compared with water, the use of a tert-base having lower activity as a raw material of the objective compound, etc. The orthoester used as the dehydrative condensation agent is a compound of formula R<1>-C(OR<2>)3 [R<1> is alkyl, aryl, etc.; R<2> is lower alkyl or aryl].
