Animal feed compns. contg. phenylethanolamine derivs. I, Ia, Ib (X=H, halogen or CN; Y=H, NR8R9 or NHCOR5; Z=H, halogen, OH etc.; R1=H or C1-4 alkyl; R2=H, C1-6 alkyl or C3-4 alkenyl; R3=H, C1-6 alkyl, C3-6 cycloalkyl etc.; R4=H, OH or OR6; R5=H, C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy; R6=C1-6 alkyl, C2-5 alkanoyl etc.; R7=H,C1-4 alkyl, Ph.; R8=H, C1-4 alkyl or alkenyl; R9=H, alkyl, cycloalkyl etc.) were prepd. and used to promote growth and reduce body fat content. Thus, p- fluoroacetophenone was reacted with DMA to form p-dimethyl acetophenone, which was chlorinated with N-chlorosuccinimide to 3.5- dichloro-4-dimethylaminoacetophenonone.
