摘要 The invention relates to a process for the two-stage catalytic hydrogenation and liquefaction of coal for obtaining increased yields of low-boiling hydrocarbon liquid and gas products. In the process, the particulate coal is slurried with a liquid solvent derived from the process and fed at a temperature below about 343.3 DEG C (650 DEG F) into a first stage of a catalytic reaction zone which is operated under conditions which promote a controlled rate of the liquefaction of the coal, while at the same time the recycled hydrocarbon oils are hydrogenated under conditions which favour hydrogenation reactions. The reactor of the first stage is held at a temperature of 343.3 to 426.7 DEG C (650 to 800 DEG F), at a hydrogen partial pressure of 70.3 to 281 kg/cm<2> (1000 to 4000 psig) and at 10 to 60 lb/hr/ft<3> space velocity. The partially hydrogenated material from the reaction zone of the first stage is passed directly to the second stage of the catalytic reaction zone, which is held at a temperature of 398.9 to 468.6 DEG C (750 to 875 DEG F) for further hydrogenation and thermal hydroconversion reactions.
