The marking device according to the invention is a device whereby multi-digit groups of symbols, generally numerals, can be transferred onto an article which is to be marked, for example in the form of an embossing or an imprint. The matrices of the symbols to be reproduced are arranged, for example, on endless symbol carriers, preferably on the circumference of printing or embossing reels (4, 6, 8, 10). The printing or embossing reels are grouped in a printing or embossing head (2). The symbol carriers (4, 6, 8, 10) are individually adjustable, adjustment being performed directly with the aid of separate setting apparatuses (12-18), which preferably contain stepping motors (18 A-D) and to which the symbol carriers are connected for drive purposes in a non-slip manner. The setting apparatuses are connected to a common control apparatus (22, 24) and can be set to predetermined values. In conjunction with a coordinate control, printing or embossing heads with a greatly reduced number of digits can be used. In a first marking operation, for example, only every second digit is embossed or printed, while the intervening digits are filled in in a further marking operation. Multiple markings arranged in sequence are also possible. Simpler multi-digit marking tools can be produced without time-consuming and fault-prone overflow mechanisms. <IMAGE>
