The unit for pressing out plastic compositions from cartridges has an electric motor and a gear which converts the rotary movement of the electric motor into a translatory expulsion movement of a pressure element. The unit has a seating shell for the cartridge. In order to provide a unit which is as compact as possible, balanced and specifically tailored to the purpose of use, the seating shell is arranged on the topside of the unit and the pressure element is of U-shaped design and arranged below or behind the seating shell. The pressure element can also consist of a linked chain which is deflected essentially through 180 DEG in the housing. The linked chain can consist of semi-oval links so that the linked chain can be kinked in only one direction and, by contrast, is stiff in the other direction.
