PURPOSE:To attain ease of constitution for a gateway device and a bridge device and to eliminate the need for a local area network of a succeeding stage by studying path information and storing the result temporarily while a packet is being transferred to the gateway device and the bridge device. CONSTITUTION:In transferring information between communication nodes T21 and T11, a packet formed by adding an address representing a destination node T11 and a sender communication node T21 to the said information is sent. A sub-area number 01 belonging to the gateway device is given to a gateway device F21 and bus-area numbers 03, 04 of two sub-area network coupled with the said bridge device are given to a bridge device B12. When the gateway device receives a packet from a slave network C3, the sub-area number represented in the destination address and the sub-area number to which the gateway device itself belongs are compared, and when the bus-area number is different, whether or not the link address of the bridge device serving as a transfer path to the destination sub-area is stored on a path selection table in the gateway device is checked.
