In a hydrostatic drive for a vehicle with at least two axles, a hydraulic motor (16, 19, 25, 28) with constant displacement is assigned to each driven wheel. The hydraulic motors are fed by a fixed displacement pump (11) which is driven by the internal combustion engine (10) of the vehicle. The hydraulic motors are connected appropriately in series and/or in parallel to the inflowing pressure medium during the shifting of the gears. For this purpose, two directional control valves (32, 36; 34, 35) are assigned to each drive axle. By means of the fixed displacement pump (11) an accumulator (39) connected to the high pressure line is also charged, which accumulator (39) can be used, for example, to drive two hydraulic motors (40, 46) for driving the fan and the alternator, which however are usually also fed from the high pressure side. In this way it is possible, by skilful dimensioning and circuitry of the pump and the hydraulic motors and corresponding graduation of the individual gears to run at the optimum level of efficiency of internal combustion engine and hydraulics. <IMAGE>
