In the case of a device for switching electrical appliances on and off, especially mobile electrical appliances which can be operated manually, such as lawnmowers or the like which are provided with an electric drive motor, having a push-button (momentary contact) switch (8) which is inserted into a housing (7) and has a push button (10) which can be operated by means of at least one dead-man's handle (6) which is supported on the housing side, a high level of safety can be ensured in that a slide (11) rests against the push button (10) of the push-button switch (8), which slide (11) is guided such that it can be moved in the operating direction of the push button and has a driver lug (13) which can move transversely with respect to the movement direction of a switching finger (18) of the dead man's handle (6), can be moved by means of an operating device (engaging device), which is mounted in the housing (7), against the force of a restoring spring (which acts on it) from a position which does not cover the free end of the switching finger (18) into a position engaging under the free end of the switching finger (18), and, in the region of that limit position of the slide (11) which holds down the push button (10) and can be reached by means of the switching finger (12) acting on it, rests against a web which is on the housing side and holds it in the position engaging under the end of the switching finger (18) which acts on it. <IMAGE>
