In a process to burn refuse materials, in particular relatively moist and/or low caloric value refuse materials from households, municipalities and industry, commonly referred to as ''garbage'', combustion air is added in staggered amounts to the firing during the refuse burning process depending on the progressive burning down or burning out of the refuse as it undergoes its combustion in the furnace. In order to prevent the formation of toxic organic compounds and, as applicable, to decompose them thermically and to reduce the nitrogen oxide content of the fumes, it is proposed that instead of at least part of the combustion air, oxygen be blown into the furnace. Preferably, oxygen should be added to the burning refuse at an advanced stage of burning out during the second half of the combustion process.
|
