PURPOSE:To record many still pictures and to eliminate the limitation of the quality of an audio signal by recording a video signal on the 1st track at intervals of specific fields, and compressing the sound signal of the specific fields on the time base and recording it on the 2nd track. CONSTITUTION:A rotary drum is provided with a rotary video head 3 and a rotary audio head 7 opposite each other at an interval of, for example, 180 deg.; and the video signal (a) is recorded on the 1st track of a magnetic tape 4 at intervals of six fields and the analog sound signal (b) of six fields is AD- converted, compressed on the time base, and recorded on the 2nd track of the magnetic tape 4. A video signal (c) reproduced by the rotary video head 3 is made into a video signal (e) of one 8:2 interlaced frame in a field memory 8 and led out from a terminal 9. A time-base compressed sound signal (f) reproduced by the rotary audio head 7, on the other hand, is expanded on the time basis and DA-converted to obtain a signal (g), which is led out from a terminal 11. Consequently, many still pictures are recorded and the limitation of the quality of the sound signal is eliminated.
