PURPOSE:Tar acid containing phenolic compounds as main components is produced in high purity by removing tar base existing as impurities from crude tar acid recovered from coke oven with simple and effective adsorption means using active clay as the adsorbent. CONSTITUTION:Impurity tar base existing in crude tar acid recovered from coke oven is made to contact with active clay at a temperature above normal temperature to effect the adsorption and removal of the tar base from the tar acid. The amount of the active clay is selected to exceed the necessary adsorption capacity. Active clay is a natural adsorbent produced by treating a silica-alumina-type acid earth with a mineral acid, usually sulfuric acid, and is industrially utilized as an agent for the decoloring and purification of lubricants, oils or fats and various other oils.
