PURPOSE:A polar arotic solvent such as dialkylformamide or dialkyl sulfoxide is used to effect the reaction between 3-halo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid and alpha,omega- dihalogenopolymethylene whereby the title compound used as an intermediate of polyester is obtained. CONSTITUTION:The reaction of 3-halogeno-4-hydroxybenzoic acid of formula I (X is halogen; R is H, lower alkyl) or its lower alkyl ester (in the form of its alkali metal salt such as sodium salt of 2-chloro-4-methoxycarbonylphenolate) with an alpha,omega-dihalopolymethylene such as ethylene dichloride is carried out in a polar aprotic solvent such as dialkylacetamide, tetralkylurea, alkyl cyanide or their mixture to give an ether compound of formula III [alpha,beta-bis(2-choro-4- methoxycarbonylphenoxy)ethane]. USE:An intermediate for polyester which is used as video tapes.
