In a winder for synthetic filament, a chuck (10), upon which packages of filament are formed in use, has a filament catching and severing ring (46) located beside a chuck region on which a bobbin tube (26) is secured during a winding operation. In use, a filament (52) is moved axially of the chuck (10) first into the catching/severing ring (46) and then onto the adjacent tube (26). Guide means (60) for moving the filament (52) is operated to increase the speed of axial movement of the filament as soon as it has been caught by the catching ring (46).
