PURPOSE:To improve a signal-to-noise ratio by forming a couple of magnetic materials so that their parts facing surfaces of a storage medium are in a rectangle whose sides facing a recording/reproducing gap is longer than their opposite sides. CONSTITUTION:A mask 7 is formed of a material, such as alumina, which is hardly etched on the magnetic pole formation surface 1b of a substrate 1 except where a lower magnetic pole part 5b is formed, a magnetic film 9 which has high magnetic permeability is formed by sputtering on the magnetic pole formation surface 1b and a resist layer 11 is formed thereupon by using SiO2. Then, the surface is flattened by an etch-back method by ion milling and the lower magnetic pole part 5b is formed and an insulating layer 13 is formed on the magnetic pole formation surface 1b and then an upper magnetic pole part 5a is formed by sputtering by the use of a metal mask opposite the lower magnetic pole part 5b. A protection film 15 is formed lastly and the thin film head is obtained by the simplified manufacturing process mentioned above. |
