An electric storage battery includes a plurality of cells within a container, each cell comprising a cell pack of substantially planar plates interleaved with separator material. The two end surfaces of each cell pack engage respective planar spacer members 2, 10 which in turn engage either an end wall or an intercell partition of the container.
