PURPOSE:To enable high-density recording by regulating the specific surface of the metallic magnetic powder in a magnetic layer contg. the metallic magnetic powder consisting of iron to more than a specified value and incorporating a phosphoric ester into the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic layer 2 is provided on a carrier 1 of a magnetic recording medium and a BC layer 3 can be furnished on the rear surface of the carrier 1. The specific surface of metallic magnetic powder contained in the magnetic layer 2 is regulated to >=60m<2>/g BET value and a phosphoric ester is incorporated into the magnetic layer 2. Fe, an Fe-Ni-Co alloy, etc., are used as the magnetic powder and an ester shown by formula I is used as the phosphoric ester. In the formula, R shows -O-X, X is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbonic residue, R' expresses a hydroxyl group or -O-X' and X' represents a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbonic residue.
