PURPOSE:To improve the durability of the titled medium by specifying a magnetic layer and an undercoat layer in the recording medium provided with the undercoat layer between a flexible base material and the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:An undercoat layer is provided between a flexible base material and a magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium, the thickness of the magnetic layer is regulated to <=2mum, the thickness of the undercoat layer is controlled to <=0.15mum and a binder having <=300% degree of swelling to tetrahydrofuran is incorporated into the undercoat layer. The magnetic layer generally consists of a binder which is an org. high molecular compd., magnetic powder, a lubricant, an antistatic agent, an abrasive, a dispersant, etc. A vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, a thermoplastic resin such as a polyurethane resin or an epoxy resin and a thermosetting resin obtained by adding a cross- linking agent of a polyisocyanate compd. to the thermoplastic resin or further a multifunctional acrylate which is cross-linked by heat, an activation beam, etc., are, for example, used as the binder. Consequently, the durability is improved.
