PURPOSE:To simplify initial registration of a user by allotting a substitutive on receiving registration input of a defective track by accessing a substitutive track in which address information is written in the discriminating section when a track in which defect flag is written. CONSTITUTION:The recording area 12 of a disk 10 is divided into a normal track area 14 concentric to the center and a substitutive track area 16. Information of 1 sector is divided into a discriminating section and a data section, and address information is constituted of cylinder number, head number and sector number. As initial registering operation, a user designates a defective track existing in the normal track area 14. On receiving this designation input, a disk controller 2 sets defect flag A of the discriminating section of designated defective track, and at the same time, allots a track in the substitutive track area 16 as a substitutive track, and writes the cylinder number of the substitutive track in the area of cylinder number of the discriminating section of the defective track. Thus, the burden of a user is reduced remarkably.
