PURPOSE:To obtain efficiently optically active L-carnitine from crotonobetaine, by cultivating a bacterium in the presence of crotonobetaine anaerobically. CONSTITUTION:A bacterium (Escherichia coli LF03301, Proteus vulgaris IF03851, etc.) is anaerobically cultivated in the presence of crotonobetaine at 15-60 deg.C at 3-9 pH to give efficiently L-carnitine from crotonobetaine. In the cultivation under an anaerobic condition, complicated culture control such as aeration, stirring, etc. is not required, so that incidental facilities can be reduced. USE:Remedying acute or chronic myocardial ischemia in the cardiovascular system, breast pang, arrhythmia of heart or caardiac incompetence.
