PURPOSE:To to automatically sort articles such as a tire or the like by sorting articles transferred from a read portion according to a sorting signal output by scanning storage in the direction of label bar array to interprete a code. CONSTITUTION:Plural directions of scanning an image from each start point are previously set in CPU 109, and an effective direction is selected amount the plural directions. An image is scanned in the selected direction to read a bar code. The result is processed to output a classification signal to a control portion 110. On inputting an interpreted classification signal, according to a set destination designation, a signal is output to a sorting device disposed at a designated position in synchronization with the advance of an article. Among the plural image scan directions, an effective image scan direction is selected, the image is scanned in the selected direction to interprete the content of a bar code, and the result is output to a classification signal sorting control portion 110.
