The end detector comprises at least one light-emitting element and at least one light-receiving element. One of the lightemitting and light-receiving elements is arranged at a position below a combined space made up of a tape cassette loading space and a room for receiving tape which is being drawn out from the tape cassette by tape loading means. The other light-emitting or light-receiving elements are arranged in a position above the loaded tape cassette so that there is an oblique path for a light beam extending from the light-emitting to the light-receiving element. In order to detect the end of a tape the light-receiving element receives the light beam passing through the first or second leader.
