A generator(10) has an array of U-tubes in a shell(20). Tube vibration is prevented by a support(30) which surrounds and is closely spaced from each tube. A device for testing whether a tube is locked in to the support, includes a rod with a first end inside the tube being tested and a second end outside. The first end is fixed to the tube, and equal lengths of the rod and tube are heated. Movement of the second end of the rod indicates that the tube is locked in.
