PURPOSE:To apply KANA (Japanese syllabary)-KANJI (Chinese character) conversion processing in matching with the input of the operator by retrieving a dictionary where information related to the reading of a word is stored in accordance with the movement of a cursor representing the input position. CONSTITUTION:A KANA data up to a location corresponding to the cursor position of a data buffer 609 is used to retrieve the index of a dictionary file. When the cursor position corresponds to two characters or over, whether the content of the partial dictionary corresponding to the present cursor position is coincident with the content of the partial dictionary or not is discriminated and when they are coincident, the location corresponding to the present cursor position of a partial dictionary managing register 606 is set. When not coincident, whether the partial dictionary management register just before is set or not is discriminated and when set, whether or not the final read block register 610 and the result of retrieval are the same is discriminated, and when different, the result of retrieval are the same is discriminated, and when different, the result of retrieval is set to the partial dictionary management register 606, the retrieval block is read from the dictionary file to the partial dictionary to change the content of the partial dictionary.
