PURPOSE:To limit a scanning width without lowering a read rate at a scanning end by providing a light shut region with a fine strip shape having a low reflectance and a low transmissivity onto a beam optical path. CONSTITUTION:A beam light 4 outputted from a beam light source 3 passes through a hole of a holed mirror 5, is polarized by a polarizer 6, reflected in a mirror 1 and the result scans a scanning line 7. An effective scattered light 10 irradiating an effective photodetection area 9 among reflected and scatted lights from a bar code 8 on the scanning line 7 is reflected by the polarizer 6 and the holed mirror 5, made incident to a photoelectric converter 11, where the light is decoded. In order to limit the width of the scanning line 7, a slit shape light shut region 12 having a low reflectance and low transmissivity is provided on the mirror 1, an since the effective photodetection area 9 is not decreased largely even when the bar code 8 is at the edge of the scanning line 7, the reading rate is not lowered.
