PURPOSE:To obtain the title medium having excellent lubricity and corrosion resistance and improved durability by composing the protective layer of carbon. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic thin film is formed on the surface of a substrate and a protective film layer is formed on the surface of the magnetic thin film to obtain a magnetic recording medium. The protective film layer is composed of amporphous carbon or a laminate of amorphous carbon and diamond carbon or a mixture of amporphous carbon and diamond carbon. Namely, the protective film consists of amorphous carbon having 10<-2>-10<2> OMEGA.cm resistivity or a laminate of amorphous carbon and diamond carbon having >=10<6> OMEGA.cm resistivity or a mixture of amorphous carbon and diamond carbon having 10<2>-10<5> OMEGA.cm resistivity and a recording medium having excellent resistance to corrosion and weather and excellent lubricity can be obtained.
