PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance in high selectivity, by reacting cyclopentadiene with a 3,4-dihalogeno-1-butene, and dehalogenating the resultant 5-(1,2-dihalogenoethyl)-2-norbornene. CONSTITUTION:Cyclopentadiene is reacted with a 3,4-dihalogeno-1-butene as necessary in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone, or a solvent, e.g. benzene, at 140-200 deg.C under 10-50 kg/cm<2>G pressure for 1.5-3 hr to give a 5-(1,2-dihalogenoethyl)-2-norbornene expressed by formula I (X is halogen), which is then dehalogenated with a dehalogenating agent dissolved or suspended in a solvent, e.g. metallic sodium-naphthalene/ethylene glycol, at 25-80 deg.C for 5-20 hr to affor the aimed substance expressed by formula II. USE:A precursor for 5-ehtylidene-2-norbornene (the third component of EPDM).
