PURPOSE:A catalyst component, obtained by bringing a magnesium salt of a fatty acid into contact with a diester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, halogenated hydrocarbon and titanium halide, acting with a high activity in use for polymerizing an olefin and capable of giving a stereoregular polymer in high yield. CONSTITUTION:(A) A catalyst component obtained by bringing (i) a magnesium salt of a fatty acid, e.g. magnesium stearate or magnesium octanoate, into contact with (ii) a diester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, e.g. dimethyl phthalate, (iii) a halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g. propyl chloride or chcloroform, and (iv) a titanium halide expressed by the formula TiX4 (X is halogen), e.g. TiCl4, is used in combination with (B) a nitrogen-containing organic compound expressed by the formula (R is alkyl or alkoxy) and (C) an organoaluminum compound, e.g. trialkylaluminum, as a catalyst for polymerizing an olefin.
