PURPOSE:To shorten an output shaft connected to a crankshaft and thereby make an engine smaller by installing interlocking mechanisms for opening and closing valves in an opposite direction with the core of the output shaft as its center and arranging the lifting action of individual inlet and outlet valves through the interlocking mechanisms. CONSTITUTION:When a crankshaft rotates, the follower 39e of the interlocking mechanism 34a for an inlet valve, for instance, is guided by a guiding groove 32 formed in the output part 25a of the crankshaft. And while the crankshaft rotates twice, the follower 39e slides over the entire periphery of the guiding groove 32, rotating the entire oscillating member 38 around the supporting shaft 36. Then, the cam part 39c of the oscillating member 38 moves round the auxiliary shaft 36. As a result, a plain tappet 40a pressed against the cam surface 39d of the cam part 39c moves up and down within the range of the lifting volume R, opening or closing an inlet valve. Since the interlocking mechanism 34b for an outlet valve is placed in the opposite position to the above- mentioned interlocking mechanism 34a with an output shaft part 25a as its center at this time, it opens or closes the outlet valve in about 180 degrees phase difference from the inlet valve.
