A retainer for the active material of a penciltype storage battery electrode is formed with a plurality of pockets 13 from a woven fabric of acid-resistant thermoplastic resin which is shrunk and hardened by a thermal process about cylindrical dies temporarily introduced into the pockets. The thermoplastic material may be an acrylic resin or a copolymer of vinylchloride or of acrylonitrile. The thermal process preferably includes heating the material to just below its softening-point. As shown, the retainer is formed from two pieces of fabric 11, 12 which are woven together with the weft or warp threads of one piece being crossed to the other piece along the junction lines 10 between the pockets. |
