The present invention relates to a method for the recovery and neutralization of toxic and/or foul-smelling sulphurous compounds. According to the method the compounds are absorbed in a filter 3 of activated charcoal, following which they are rendered chemically harmless. According to the invention fibrous activated charcoal 3 is used as means of absorption and the compounds absorbed in the activated charcoal fibres 3 are treated with oxidizing chemicals for oxidation of the sulphur compounds into non-volatile and relatively odour- free compounds, such as sulphonates, sulphites and sulphates or even partially as sulphur in elemental form. An aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, potassium permanganate, chromic acid, chromate, hypochlorite or persulphuric acid or salts thereof are used as oxidizing solution. The said treatment can be performed by doping the filter material immediately after attaining saturation level in the oxidizing solution. <IMAGE> |
