In a copier, a charger and a transfer device are connected to a common electrical high-voltage supply. For the purpose of mutually independent control of the currents to a photoconductor drum which are caused by corona discharges produced in the charger and in the transfer device, there is mounted in one of the discharge paths a grid which is connected to frame via a switching device. In spite of, for example, the high voltage present on the charger, it is possible in this way to derive in a controlled fashion the corona discharges actually produced thereby or the corona current thereby produced to the photoconductor.
