The machine ensiles harvested endive roots and covers them with earth, travelling on parallel rails at a speed to suit the incoming material. An adjustable-depth digger mechanism has teeth on its scrapers agitating the earth, the scrapers lifting the earth onto a conveyor, this delivering into a hopper. - When the machine has travelled for the full length, this hopper is shut, the earth being then tipped onto the roots already ensiled. The fresh roots are contained in another hopper from which they are extracted at the bottom, being pressed by a plate below it into the loose ground. They are then sprayed and finally covered with the dug-up earth, after which the machine is jacked up and moved to the next bed for the process to be repeated.
