The object of the invention is to generate, by simple means, a signal proportional to the overload of an engine, which signal is independent of the position of the accelerator, the state of the engine, and of external influences stemming from the coupling to other drive assemblies. The essence of the invention lies in the fact that the output of an engine speed pick-up (1) is connected to the input of a memory (2) and of a differential element (3), that the input of the memory (2) is further connected to the output of an indicator (4) of the maximum fuel feed for one revolution of the injection pump of the internal combustion engine, and that the output of the memory (2) is connected to the input of the differential element (3). <IMAGE>
