PURPOSE:To obtain a colored panel, capable of coloring only on the surface thereof, and having a constant light transmittance regardless of the wall thickness, by bringing a silver nitrate-containing salt into contact with a panel glass at a specific temperature or below, diffusing the silver into the panel glass by the ion exchange, and coloring the silver. CONSTITUTION:A salt containing silver nitrate, e.g. mixed molten salt of NaNO3 and AgNO3, is brought into contact with a panel glass at <=400 deg.C, and the silver salt is subjected to ion exchange with alkali ions in the panel glass. The resultant panel glass after ion exchange treatment is once cooled, washed and heat-treated at a temperature below the annealing point of the glass, e.g. 500 deg.C. Thus, silver is aggregated and colored to color the surface layer of the panel glass to amber. Only the surface layer of the panel glass can be colored according to the above-mentioned method, and the aimed colored panel having a constant light transmittance regardless of the wall thickness of the panel glass is obtained. The colored panel of uniform light transmittance can be produced even in a small quantity and local coloring can be carried out.
