Felt covers on heated porous rollers for drying and smoothing laundry are maintained at an elevated temp. and thus relatively dry by preheating the air to be drawn via a hood through the passing linen and into the hollow rollers. For a multiple roll system, the air is pref. delivered initially to the last of the rolls in the ironing sequence and then circulated from the interior of the roll to the hood of the preceding roll, etc. before being exhausted from the first roll of the ironing sequence.
